Why we built Goldstar Care differently — and what we refuse to compromise on
When Renato and I set out to build a care platform, we had one non-negotiable: we refuse to scale by sacrificing the things that make care actually work. Here's what that means in practice.
There's a familiar story in the care sector. Small provider grows, hits scale, processes break down, quality drops, reputation sours, they get acquired or they plateau. The thing that made them good — knowing people by name, showing up when things got hard — gets ground out by the machinery of growth.
When we started, we knew we wanted to build something that scaled. But we also knew we didn't want to build another version of that story. So we had to be honest about what we'd never trade away.
Three things we refuse to compromise on
One — stable relationships between participants and carers. The participant sees the same faces. Not every shift, but consistently enough that there's continuity, trust, and the kind of observation that only comes from familiarity. This is expensive and harder to roster. We do it anyway.
Two — RN oversight on every complex case. No exceptions. If we can't staff it properly, we don't take the case. That's a discipline, not a marketing line.
Three — leadership who answers the phone. Renato and I are accessible. Our Head of Supports, Lorrae, is accessible. If a family is in trouble, there's a person they can reach who can make decisions. That has to stay true even as we grow — and the operating model has to be designed for that to stay true.
"The test isn't whether you can grow. The test is whether you can grow without losing the reason anyone wanted you in the first place."
What that means operationally
It means we invest in back-office and shared services so the onshore team can focus on relationships and clinical decisions. It means we build career pathways so experienced carers stay, not churn. It means we say no to participants where we can't deliver, even when it hurts commercially.
It also means we're willing to grow slower than competitors who are willing to accept lower standards. That's fine. This is a long game. Trust compounds or it collapses — and we're building for the compound.
Wherever you are in the journey, we can help.
Whether you're seeking care for yourself, supporting a family member, or referring as a professional — we'll meet you where you are.
